The best "toy" is just going out. Anywhere. At least from my limited experience, there was no such thing as a baby toy that could capture his attention long enough to provide that sort of satisfaction and boredom relief you are in search of. Even if a toy works for 5 or 10 minutes...I guess that is helpful while you're cooking dinner...but not a cure for boredom. But, so not to render myself completely useless, I think bubbles are fun and captivating for them.
max mostly likes toys that aren't toys. like the phone, and remote (both of which we don't let him have), magazines, my measuring cups, spoons, etc. nothing really holds his attention for more than 10-15 minutes though.
Cameron loves his toys that he can pull himself up to standing position. He also loves his vibrating dog that hangs on his carseat. Seriously, since Cameron is crawling, he just wants whatever he can see.
